Britons opt for long-haul travels

Many Brits are planning long-haul holidays as they look to take advantage of favourable exchange rates, according to a new study.

Many Brits are planning long-haul holidays as they look to take advantage of favourable exchange rates, according to a new study.

The American Express Currency Index shows that there has been a rise in Brits looking to travel outside of the eurozone and this could lead to a boost in numbers taking flights to South Africa and India.

"When the pound fell during the start of the financial crisis, it became more expensive for Britons to holiday with the Euro and the US Dollar," explained American Express Global Foreign Exchange Services director Terry Perrin.

He added: "Britons began to realise it would be more cost effective to look further afield and book holidays to destinations that previously may have been overlooked."

The research concluded that more people will look to take one holiday in 2011 but that this is more likely to be an all-inclusive destination outside of the usual European hotspots.

A total of 17 countries are now members of the eurozone including France, Estonia and Cyprus.
