Cape Town to develop "responsible tourism"South Africa's Cape Town is keen to develop its international reputation as a responsible tourism destination.

Created in 2004, the Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU) is the marketing organisation for the city and the surrounding Western Cape region and has recently held a number of events to help promote the need for a sustainable approach.

The recent Responsible Tourism Week, which ran from February 14th to 18th, focused on the need to attract international visitors who take flights to Cape Town and also encourage strategies within the industry to tackle global warming and environmental damage.

CTRU highlighted the importance of international travellers adopting a conscientious approach during their trips.

The organisation's chief executive, Calvyn Gilfellan, said: "We're also very proud of Cape Town's global recognition as the best destination in the 2009 Responsible Tourism Awards."
