Importance of travel insurance urged by Foreign Office Travellers heading away on flights to South Africa or other countries to enjoy a holiday of a lifetime have been reminded that taking sensible steps is important in case anything should happen.

Offering advice to people heading abroad, the Foreign Office has reminded them of how vital it is to have a travel insurance policy in place.

It noted that the cost of medical care in some countries is very high, with people who fall ill in the US spending as much as £4,725 on their treatment.

Phil Lord of the Foreign Office's Know Before You Go Campaign said people may skip taking out a policy to save money, only to face a bill for thousands of pounds later.

"Getting comprehensive travel insurance means that whilst an accident may disrupt your holiday, it won't bankrupt you," Mr Lord added.

Budget travellers were recently advised by Essential Travel's Stuart Bensusan that people taking flights to South Africa and other nations need to have cover, regardless of their overall budget.
