Tourist numbers to South Africa on the increase

A rise in the number of people booking flights to South Africa could be seen soon as the country has announced it has seen a surge in visitor numbers.

The number of foreign tourists travelling into the country rose by two per cent during December 2011 compared with the same time during the previous year, Business Day reported.

This rise equates to 2.5 million people travelling between the country's points of entry last month, with an almost even split recorded between travellers arriving and departing from the country.

Outside of the African nations, the highest numbers of visitors were seen coming in from the UK, the US and Germany, the statistics recorded by the Department of Home Affairs showed.

Some people taking flights to South Africa could be planning to take part in specialist tours or adventure trips, after Abta - The Travel Association stated this is a growing trend.
