Anyone who has a holiday booked for this year would be well-advised to ensure that their passport is up-to-date.

Workers at the passport offices have begun a three-day strike today (July 23rd) which could affect thousands of would-be travellers who realise too late their passport has expired.

Holidaymakers have been advised to not leave their passport to the last minute - especially if it needs updating - and to get it sent off well before the date of travel in case of any further industrial action.

An Identity and Passports Service (IPS) spokesman told the Associated Press: "All IPS regional office counters will remain open and we are able to issue passports for those in emergency situations or with urgent needs.

"Any customer who has booked for premium services or an interview will have the appointment honoured."

Meanwhile, anyone who has not yet booked their break may be interested in flights to Thailand, with the Association of British Travel Agents reporting an increase in long-haul holidays due to the strength of currency in Europe.
