Ensure policies cover everything, travellers toldTravellers have been warned to ensure they purchase an insurance policy that covers all circumstances, even those which may be unforeseen.

Jeremy Moll, insurance expert from comparethemarket.com, said that people should not be put off going on holidays, but should make sure their policy is comprehensive given the current economic climate.

"Check the terms and conditions on your travel insurance policy closely. If you have any concerns … you should always shop around for a policy that covers you for every eventuality," he commented.

Mr Moll also recommended that holidaymakers book their breaks through an Atol-affiliated tour operator so that they can claim money back should anything go wrong.

A recent survey by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office found that Thailand was found to have the third highest rate of hospitalisations for Brits, which it put down to people renting motorbikes and being involved in accidents.

Anyone considering renting a bike while on holidays to Thailand should remember that a Thai driving licence or an international driving permit is needed to do so.

Travel insurance will be invalid if such a licence is not obtained.
