Eco-friendly holidays to Thailand can make a difference

As the trend for holidays that give something back grows, people from the UK may wish to book flights to Thailand to participate in a new kind of trip.

A community-based scheme called the Koh Yao Noi Homestay Club allows tourists to stay in the homes of host families on the island, which is close to Bangkok.

Bang Bao, the coordinator of the initiative, said: "About 80 per cent of your money is given directly to the host family. It can really make a lot of difference over a year."

Tourists joining in the homestay programme get a chance to see how the people of Koh Yao Noi live, witnessing daily crab and prawn fishing trips and eating authentic Thai food.

A spokesperson for the Tourism Authority of Thailand recently told the Telegraph that 835,000 people from the UK visited Thailand last year.

Meanwhile Rob Harris, founder of African Conservation Experience, predicts that more people will go on volunteering holidays or adult gap years in the coming months.Meet the editors...
