Secure your property, holidaymakers warnedWith many people potentially heading off on gap year holidays to Thailand, a warning has been issued to not leave properties unattended, as this may be an invitation to burglars.

Confused.com home insurance expert Darren Black said that anyone about to go on their travels, especially for long periods of time, should take some simple precautions to secure their properties.

Firstly, they may wish to ask neighbours to open and close curtains and move vehicles to give the impression that someone is in.

Newspapers and milk should be cancelled so that the build-up does not attract criminals, while it is sensible not to advertise that you are going abroad via social networking sites, Mr Black said.

"It is important for anyone flying south for winter, be it to do a bush tucker trial or just to catch up on some winter sun, to spend a couple of minutes ensuring that their nests are well and truly protected," he concluded.

Anyone who is not a fan of the cold may wish to seek out a winter sun destination soon - the Met Office recently announced that temperatures in Britain this winter are likely to be lower than those seen last year.Meet the editors...
