Try holidays to Thailand for truly sustainable tourismHolidays to Thailand are best for people who want to participate in truly sustainable tourism, one travel writer has argued.

Valere Tjolle, in an article for TravelMole, points out that there is much more to the Asian country than spicy food and wonderful beaches.

"What the media images don't generally portray about Thailand's tourism is a strongly growing sustainable tourism industry that is already winning accolades galore," she comments.

Initiatives within the country include the North Andaman Tsunami Relief, which has already carried out 120 projects with the help of volunteers, as well as the Community Based Tourism Institute, which works to strengthen the capacity of Thai communities to manage tourism sustainably.

Ms Tjolle concludes by saying that Thailand is the "cradle" of sustainable tourism thanks to its principles and hard work.

A spokesperson for the Tourism Authority of Thailand recently told the Telegraph that 835,000 people from the UK visited Thailand last year.

Meanwhile Rob Harris, founder of African Conservation Experience, predicts that more people will go on volunteering holidays or adult gap years in the coming months.
