Food and fuel down, holidays upCash-conscious Britons are cutting back on the money they spend on food and fuel rather than going without a holiday, it has emerged.

According to a poll carried out by VisitBritian, 80 per cent said they intend to be more thrifty in the supermarket, while 74 per cent will try to spend less on fuel.

Meanwhile, 67 per cent will rely on their old threads, as this percentage of people said they will spend less on clothes and other luxuries.

Mike Bedingfield, VisitBritain's marketing director, said: "As the research shows we are reluctant to give up the holidays that are an increasingly important part of our lives."

Many people said this was because of the stress-busting properties of a holiday.

People looking for a far-flung destination that won't break the bank could consider booking cheap flights to Thailand and going on a conservation holiday, staying with other eco-conscious tourists to cut costs.
