Holidays in Thailand just got more festive

People heading out on flights to Thailand for the festive season may find that the celebrations are better than ever this year.

This is due to the fact that the Bank of Thailand has announced an extra public holiday across the country for January 2nd, meaning that the total consecutive number of days off will amount to five.

"Normally the Bank of Thailand will not set more than four consecutive holidays. To fix Friday January 2nd as a bank holiday will not significantly affect the country's productivity and it will boost the tourism sector," it said in a statement.

According to Thailand.com, although the country's official new year begins in April, its people happily celebrate along with the rest of the world on January 1st.

This is thanks in part to the diversity of people who live in the south Asian country.

In Bangkok, the hotels bring out fairy lights and most bars and restaurants arrange special promotions.

The website suggests that the most notable places to watch the firework displays are at Sanam Luang and Wat Saket, on top of the Golden Mount.
