Taking a volunteer break, for example, a holiday to Thailand, could be the perfect opportunity to give something back after the indulgence of the festive season.

This is according to Jeffrey Glueck of Travelocity, who said that a recent poll had found that 13 per cent of people hope to go on such a trip during the course of next year.

He pointed out the volunteering will give people a chance to experience the authentic part of their destination instead of just the tourist hotspots, as well as allowing their money to go where it is really needed.

"Whether or not it's on the list of New Year’s Resolutions, a volunteer [holiday] can truly change a person's perspective and remind us of what's most important in life," Mr Glueck commented.

People interested in voluntourism could book flights to Thailand, where they can participate in an initiative called the Koh Yao Noi Homestay Club.
