Ecotourism 'is getting more popular'

More tourists are choosing to take trips on which they can participate in ecotourism, such as holidays to Thailand.

More tourists are choosing to take trips on which they can participate in ecotourism, such as holidays to Thailand.

This is according to an article on the Female First site, which points out that this is because people are now more aware of the damage that unsustainable tourism can do and want to help the communities in their destinations.

It cites figures from People and Planet.net stating that 70 per cent of people in America, Britain and Austria would be prepared to pay around £100 more to stay in accommodation with a responsible attitude to the environment.

The site also suggests the Community Based Tourism Institute in Thailand as somewhere people could participate in such a break.

Indeed, Lyn Hughes, editor-in-chief of Wanderlust, said that countries can really benefit from responsible tourism since the money goes straight back where it is needed.

Jeffrey Glueck of Travelocity recently said that 13 per cent of respondents to a poll hope to go on this kind of break during 2009.
