Hostels are increasing in popularityMore people are choosing to stay in hostels when they go abroad, potentially including on holidays to Thailand.

This is according to Hostelling International's Johan Kruger, who pointed out that such accommodation could be a great alternative to ordinary hotels, particularly for people who want to save money but do not want to give up on holidays altogether.

"One way to continue travelling in a tougher economic climate is to use hostels rather than more expensive hotel alternatives," the expert suggested.

Recent statistics released by Hostelling International showed that almost 1.4 million overnight stays were booked on its affiliate site during 2008.

A spokesperson for Travelodge also recently said that opting for a hostel instead of a five-star hotel will offer travellers a "substantial saving".

People on holidays to Thailand may be interested to hear that hostels in the country can be booked for as little as £2.50 a night.
