Holidaymakers want more than just sunshine

People travelling abroad are seeking personal fulfilment on their trips instead of just time to relax.

This is the conclusion of the Kuoni 2009 Longhaul report, which found that holidays to Thailand, Dubai and India were popular among people looking further afield in 2008, Travel Weekly reports.

The company's managing director Nick Hughes said that people now look to travel in order to give them greater wellbeing, for example, by participating on volunteer holidays.

He commented: "[Travellers] really want to delve deeply under the skin of their destination, to explore further and experience more. We call this growing trend 'explorism'."

Last month, Jeffrey Glueck of Travelocity said that 13 per cent of respondents to a poll intend to go on a volunteering holiday in 2009.

He said this could be the ideal chance for people to give something back to charities or communities while enjoying a new experience at the same time.
