British people feeling squeezed by the credit crunch are haggling more on their holidays than they may have done in the past.

British people feeling squeezed by the credit crunch are haggling more on their holidays than they may have done in the past.

This is the conclusion of a poll carried out by Hotels.com, which discovered that 76 per cent of people from the UK have managed to get a bargain on their travels by bartering, saving an average of £32.20.

In fact, British people were found to be the most likely to haggle out of any country in Europe, negotiating down prices on everything from hotel meals to car rental.

Alison Couper, spokesperson for the firm, said: "Those who are willing to practise the art of haggling on their holiday are likely to find that their money will go even further."

Anyone going on holidays to Thailand soon may wish to have a go themselves - according to the BBC, haggling is a national pastime in the south Asian country.
