Young people showing they care about their environmental impactYoung British people are increasingly considering the impact upon the environment and society when choosing destinations for their holidays.

Bruce Haxton of placement organisation i-to-i said he has noticed this when looking at the incidence of young people taking volunteer holidays, pointing out that 60 per cent of the people who have booked such trips with the company are under 26.

He said: "The younger generation of this country are extremely aware and passionate about their impact, not just on the environment, but the communities they travel to and stay with."

Mr Haxton added that he has been impressed by the sustainable attitude to tourism many young people are now adopting.

Thailand could be an ideal destination for conservation holidays - thousands of backpackers head there every year as part of their gap years.

Tourists can take part in scores of volunteer programmes, including taking care of elephants, or carrying out village tasks in homestay projects.
