Gap year a good time to do something memorableAnyone who has chance to go on a gap year - including on holidays to Thailand or South Africa - should take up the opportunity, as it is likely to be an amazing experience.

This is according to Richard Arlow, a student who told Action News that he felt as if he had really participated in something meaningful during his gap year, which he spent helping local communities in Ghana, among other countries.

He said he spent time helping out at a local medical centre, where he would assist with up to 200 patients a day, along with only one doctor and a few nurses.

"Towards the end I would give injections and medications that people needed," Mr Arlow commented.

He added that a gap year can cost less than half the amount of an ordinary holiday, particularly when it involves staying with a host family.

Thailand is consistently popular with gap year travellers, thanks to its availability of cheap accommodation.
