Proper travel insurance really is essentialPeople going on holidays to Australia, Thailand and other long haul destinations have again been urged to make sure they are covered in terms of insurance.

This advice was most recently underlined by Direct Travel Insurance, which said that if a break is not covered in case of cancellation, things like jury service, illness or redundancy could cause expensive problems.

The organisation said that for the average person, a cancellation claim will amount to £1,074, while £805 is the average price for a claim on lost or delayed luggage.

However, insurance is not costly in relation, with a single trip policy for a long weekend costing under £10.

The Irish Independent recently said that single trip cover is a good cost-cutting measure if the purchaser is sure they are not likely to go abroad again within 12 months.

Meanwhile, esure recently discovered that as many of 20 per cent of travellers would consider going without insurance in order to cut costs.
