This is according to the Post Standard's Patrice Lawless, who said that the sabbaticals can act to better prepare students for university and indeed for their careers.

She pointed put that spending a year volunteering or working abroad can help people to become more motivated and focused, adding: "Having a better idea of who you are can help you achieve what you really want."

Gapyear.com told the Times in December that more people are choosing to go on gap years as the recession continues, recognising the current difficult nature of the jobs market.

Many are seeking holidays in Thailand and other Asian destinations in a bid to have some adventures while the credit crunch dies down, also benefiting their CVs with their new skills upon their return.Meet the editors...
