Cultural experiences 'are important to holidaymakers'

While many people would admit to going on holidays to Thailand and other long haul destinations simply for the sunshine and beaches, a large proportion feel that experiencing another culture is important too.

New figures published by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) show that 57 per cent of travellers would be prepared to spend a little more on their holidays if it meant that they could experience how people in other countries live.

However, for many, this does not mean giving up the luxury aspect of their trip - 56 per cent of women and 51 per cent of men said they would like their new experiences to be in an exotic location.

"Travellers [are looking] for something different and a contrast to the traditional and mainstream type of vacation," explained PATA president Greg Duffell.

In related news, it was recently noted by the Canadian Automobile Association that people aged between 44 and 62 - baby boomers - are increasingly seeking adventure holidays to broaden their view of the world.
