Rocket festival prepares to take-off in ThailandTravellers headed to Thailand in May might wish to experience the Bun Bang Fai rocket festival in the north-east of the country.

Rockets are launched into the skies in Phya Thaen Park in Yasothon in a festival to entice and honour the rain god Vassakan.

In May, farmers get ready to plant their rice fields and the celebrations are in hope that the god will bless the area with a plentiful crop.

According to Thailand.com, on average rockets are nine metres in length and competitions are held for the largest and the highest rockets in the event.

Local people dress in colourful garments and parade through the town singing and dancing. Traditional feasts and beauty pageants also accompany the festivities.

It is also reported that anyone who is responsible for crafting a rocket that fails to fly is thrown into the mud.

Rockets are thought to "stimulate the rainclouds" according to DifferentAsia.com.Meet the editors...
