Figures have shown that Brits are still heading abroad for their summer break in 2009.

"Vast majority" of Britons still holidaying overseas

Some 90 per cent of people who took a holiday last year are still taking a break in 2009, new figures have shown.

"The vast majority of people are still travelling abroad and not really cutting back substantially," explained Frances Tuke, spokeswoman for Abta - The Travel Association.

She explained that while traditional destinations in Europe were still receiving high numbers of UK visitors, countries outside of the eurozone and the US dollar areas were experiencing growth in traveller numbers.

Ms Tuke thought this was due to people seeing these destinations as offering good value for money.

In 2008, some 69 million holidays were taken by people travelling from the UK - which represented a fall of 0.6 per cent compared to the previous year, figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed.
