European breaks 'replaced by long-haul travel'

British travellers are shunning mini-breaks in Europe for holidays in Thailand, according to the results of a new survey.

Long-haul, exotic locations are becoming more popular with people from the UK, as demand for holidays in Thailand increases, the American Express Global Foreign Exchange Service Currency Index found.

"Whilst many Brits are opting for more premium holiday destinations, they are in fact reigning in their overall annual spend and forgoing mini-breaks in order to 'push the boat out' for their main annual holiday," Terry Perrin, director of trading and business development at the company explained.

According to the index, holidaymakers are travelling further to get value for money on a break, with 15 of the 25 most-popular currencies being for long-haul destinations.

The Australian dollar and the Thai bart both appeared in the top ten, increasing in popularity from 2008.

Running until the end of August, the Blooming Kra Chiao Flower Festival in Pa Hin Ngam National Park is a popular attraction for visitors taking a holiday in Thailand.
