Value of travel insurance revealedHolidaymakers booking their flights to Dubai or their holiday in Thailand should ensure they also purchase a travel insurance policy to protect them financially.

This is according to Direct Travel, which published the annual cost of claims that were made to the company in 2008.

Holidaymakers claimed an average of £747 for a cancelled trip and £770 for travel that had been cut short.

Insect bites were the cause of 252 insurance claims, with travellers receiving an average of £184.

Gastroenteritis affected 314 people, although these were mainly from destinations such as Turkey, Spain and Greece.

Jonathan Cooper, managing director at the company, explained: "Travel insurance is an absolute must for anyone planning a trip, however short. I strongly believe that travellers should be made aware of the risks they could face and the real cost of claims."

Recently, Tom Griffiths from Gapyear.com revealed that travellers could live in Thailand for approximately £5 per day and that many young professionals were taking a holiday in south-east Asia after being made redundant.Meet the editors...
