Travellers planning holidays to Thailand may be pleased to know that it has been named as one of the world's best-value destinations by Lonely Planet.

Thailand named as a best-value destination

Thailand has appeared in a list of the ten best-value holiday destinations compiled by Lonely Planet.

The Asian country was hailed as a "perennially cheap favourite" by the guide.

South Africa also made it into the top ten, alongside India, Mexico and Bulgaria.

Iceland made an appearance due to the collapse of the country's currency, while Las Vegas featured because of the substantial discounts available in the city which has been hit hard by the credit crunch.

The publication listed south-west Western Australia as featuring among the top ten regions to visit in the world, claiming that it offers "variety in spades".

London has also made an appearance in the list as a result of the weak pound. Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall commented: "The tables have turned and London's reputation as one of the world's most expensive cities is over."

Best in Travel 2010 is the fifth annual guidebook released by the travel guide that offers advice on the best places to visit and activities to try for the year ahead.
