Chiang Mai is becoming a top-notch destinationAnyone considering taking holidays to Thailand may be interested in one travel journalist's opinion of Chiang Mai in the north of the country.

Writing for the ABC News Travel site, Elena Sheppard commented: "With numerous classes, volunteer options and opportunities for adventure travel, Chiang Mai is slowly making a name for itself as a top-notch destination."

She explained that there are a wide range of activities that tourists in the region can undertake.

These include day trips to elephant conservation centres, where travellers can see the animals up close and Thai cookery classes to allow visitors to take the tastes of the region back to friends at home.

Ms Sheppard added that the area boasts unrivalled natural beauty, which makes it the ideal backdrop for a relaxing holiday.

Thailand has attracted a number of celebrities to its shores of late. Models Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell have both been spotted holidaying in Phuket recently.

British TV actress Julia Sawalha told the Daily Telegraph that she intends to visit the region to take a massage course later this year.
