Anyone who dreams of waking up on holiday next to white sand beaches, surrounded by clear blue seas and with a sense of isolation should consider booking an island getaway.

One travel agent, i-escape.com, has suggested some of the world's best island retreats and one location in Thailand is top of its list.

Koh Phra Thong is an island which lies in the Andaman Sea off of the west coast of the south-east Asian country.

It boasts only one place to stay - the Golden Buddha Beach Resort - which is made up of 21 traditional Thai-style wooden houses and offers guests empty beaches and complete peace and quiet.

For anyone who would like to do more than simply lounge on a beach, there are several activities available for guests to try, including canoeing and snorkelling.

People who want to book holidays to hot, sunny destinations this year might be encouraged by new research which revealed that spending time in the sunshine can be good for your health.

This is because the body produces vitamin D, which helps boost the immune system and is beneficial to the body's calcium absorption, according to findings by the University of Copenhagen which were published in Nature Immunology.
