Tourists and locals celebrate Song Kran in Thailand

The Thai celebrations for their New Year got underway this week, with tourists and locals all participating in the huge water fight.

Every year, the streets of Bangkok and other towns and cities around the country are filled with people brandishing water pistols and buckets, ready to soak all who pass.

This good natured water fight is all part of the fun of the Thai New Year celebrations and one which anyone who touched down on flights to Bangkok this week will no doubt have experienced.

Festivities usually last for two days, this year the celebrations run from April 13th to 15th.

The act of throwing water on people comes from the traditional bathing of village elders and Buddha as a mark of respect.

In the past, this was carried out with scented water, whereas now it has become the public, street-based water fight that many tourists flock to experience each year.
