Gap years ideal in current economic climateThose who have always dreamed of heading off on cheap flights to Phuket as part of a gap year break could find that now is the ideal time to do so.

According to travel guide firm Lonely Planet, due to the current state of the global economy, many people may be better jetting off to sunnier climes for a gap year trip.

One of the most popular spots for backpackers is Thailand and with cheap flights to Phuket widely available, there is no reason not to go. Heading to the country around the festive season could be ideal for party seekers, as the nation hosts a special version of its famous Full Moon parties on both Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.

Tom Hall, editor of Lonely Planet, said that the benefits of taking a year out "are undeniable" for both the individual concerned and the university they will end up studying at on their return.

"All of them involve people getting a broader experience away from the world of education, which they will have been part of for many years of their life, as well as they are learning about independence [and] other cultures," he said.
