Asia leads tourism growth

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) reports that there has been growth in the international holiday market during the first six months of 2010.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) reports that there has been growth in the international holiday market during the first six months of 2010.

Despite a year of economic downturn, there is a sign that tourism could be returning to stronger levels, especially within Asia and the Middle East.

Figures show that the first half of the year saw international tourist arrivals totalling 421 million – seven per cent higher than the same period in 2009 but remaining two per cent below 2008 levels.

There had been concerns that the global financial uncertainty as well as the Icelandic ash cloud could have dampened people's travel plans. However, the figures still showed strong results.

"Growth was positive in all world regions, led by a robust performance of emerging economies, expanding at eight per cent compared to six per cent in advanced economies," said the UNWTO report.

Overall, the UNWTO are forecasting a three to four per cent increase in international tourism for the 12 months of 2010.

The aim of the UNWTO is to encourage sustainable and responsible tourism industries in both developing and developed countries.
