Thai Airways launches new eco-programmePassengers travelling with Thai Airways International are to be given the chance to offset their carbon emissions.

The airline has teamed up with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to create the Carbon Offset Programme that could help travellers and the company to reduce the environmental impact of their flights.

Thai Airways International president Piyasvasti Amranand explained that the carrier is the first in the Asia-Pacific region to join the IATA scheme and will ensure that any offsetting is invested in UN-approved projects.

When booking a cheap flight to Thailand via the airline's website, travellers will be able to see the total amount of CO2 that will be emitted as a result of the flight as well as the cost that will cover offsetting the CO2. It is hoped that the ability to offset the cost online will prove popular with customers.

Thai Airways International was recently named as one of five top world-class airlines in SmartTravelAsia.com's 2010 Best in Travel poll.
