Thailands international airport is flood proofSuvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok has taken a number of steps to prevent flooding, claims its general manager.

Anirut Thanomkulbutra believes that the installation of special defences will ensure that flights to Thailand will not be disrupted during periods of heavy rain, reports Thai News Agency.

The new measures include a 3.5 metre-high and 23.5km long flood wall around the airport. There are also dedicated areas designed to hold up to 4.6 million cubic metres of water.

Airports of Thailand, the operator of Suvarnabhumi airport, has also installed large-scale pumps that are capable of draining around one million cubic metres of water in 24 hours. Targets have been set that are designed to limit water levels at the airport to below 140cm above sea levels.

Suvarnabhumi airport has been named by readers of the online magazine SmartTravelAsia.com as the third best airport in the world for 2010.
