Spring events for elephant lovers in ThailandNo visit to Thailand would be complete without seeing the country's national animal, the elephant, and this spring there are plenty of events on offer to celebrate these remarkable creatures.

Next week (April 19th) sees the Buddhist elephant ordination celebration, which involves young candidates riding to the Hat Saio Temple on the back of a colourfully decorated elephant for a special religious ceremony.

In Buddhist tradition it is believed that elephants ensure rain during the rainy season, and for this reason the ritual is carried out in Sukhothai every year.

A more recent tradition takes place at the Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo, where the creatures are treated to an annual feast, known as the Jumbo Banquet, on May 1st.

Visitors catching flights to Thailand can watch and even feed the elephants, who happily munch their way through their favourite vegetables and fruits as a thank you gift for their hard work all year round.

Admission to this show costs just 500 THB (£10) per person.
