Thai Airways announces new low-cost carrier People who take flights to Thailand with Thai Airways could soon have an even larger choice of routes soon as it has announced it is creating a new low-cost carrier.

Named Thai Smile Air, the new fleet of planes will operate out of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok from 2012.

The plan is for the service to offer trips to destinations within the country itself, such as Ubon, Chiang Rai and Surat Thani.

However, if the carrier proves to be popular, it may take steps into offering overseas trips in 2013.

Thai Airways president Piyasvasti Amranand said: "The name Thai Smile Air was selected from more than 2,000 entries from Thai employees, and I think the confirmed name suits our proposed concept of being 'trendy, friendly and worthy travel'."

Travellers on flights to Thailand who are staying in Bangkok have the chance to see some of the stunning gems on display at the city's Gems and Jewellery Fair.
