Phuket Airport sees 8m visitors in 2011

Phuket Airport has seen a record number of visitors passing through its terminals during 2011.

Travellers who took flights to Phuket in 2011 helped the terminal to experience a record year for passenger numbers, according to new figures.

The Airports of Thailand group has announced that 8,467,995 passengers travelled through Phuket International Airport during last year.

This sum represents as 20.22 per cent increase on passenger numbers when compared with the previous year.

International journeys increased by 30.77 per cent, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand estimating there had been two million international visitors to the airport over the 12 month period.

The figure compares favourably with the 2.7 million passengers who were recorded arriving at Bali's airport during 2011.

A reason why Phuket could be one of the more popular places to visit in Thailand is the wealth of events which take place in the city.

Later this week, people who take flights to Phuket with their kids could be interested to hear there will be a range of special events held to mark Children's Day.
