You are in for a big surprise if you have not visited Delhi in the last couple of years. In the wake of the approaching Commonwealth Games, the city seems to have undergone a sea change with every public facility being revamped. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport seems to have received the lion’s share of such transformation which is sure to amaze you as soon as you disembark your flight . The truly world class Terminal-3 scheduled to be up and running in mid 2010 along with recently built and one of the most sophisticated runways is going to put Delhi in the league of some of the ultra modern world cities. T3 is allegedly the second largest terminal in the world after Beijing and will equip the airport to handle about 37 million passengers annually making it the world’s sixth largest in terms of capacity.

Terminal Information: Currently, the airport is divided into two main operational Terminals and a number of sub terminals. Terminal 1 is for domestic flights, while Terminal II serves international flights. Free shuttles are operated throughout the day between the terminals. Both terminals 1 and II have information counters.
Airport Connectivity
Delhi Airport Cab Service: The airport is flooded with cab services. Myriad economy cabs (Pre-paid cabs) along with cab-on-call (radio cabs) are safe modes of transport and are readily available.
Delhi Airport Bus Service: The Delhi Administration and an agency called ‘Eats’ regularly ply buses from both terminals to the ISBT (Inter State Bus Terminus) and Connaught Place, the bustling heart of the city. Terminal 2 has a railways reservation desk as well.
Delhi Metro: With the completion of the Delhi Metro Airport Express Line which is scheduled in September 2010, the passengers will be able to check-in their baggage at the City Airport Terminals (CAT), collect boarding pass and take a high speed metro to the airport. Modelled on London’s popular Heathrow Express, the Metro’s Airport Express Line is going to provide swift connection to the New Delhi Railway Station.
Car Hire: One may dial 011-43434343 for easy cabs or 011-26779191 for AVIS in Delhi. Replace 011 with 00911 if dialling from the UK. Chauffeured Cars can be hired outside the customs halls of both terminals.
Car Parking: There is a premium parking facility outside hall B of Terminal 1, while Terminal 2 has both standard and premium parkings. There are no charges on transport between the parking and Terminal 2.
Delhi Airport Business Lounge: The halls A and B of Terminal 1 are equipped with Executive lounges. Terminal 2’s transit area houses the Air India’s Maharaja Lounge among other lounges. Apart from lounges operated by the airlines, leading five star hotels also have highly equipped lounges in the transit area, Terminal II. The availability of wi-fi internet and the conventional internet kiosks make the airport highly business traveller friendly. In fact, you don’t even need to shell out any fees for the wi-fi service.
Food & Beverage: There are plenty of snack joints and full-fledged restaurants in both Arrivals and Departures zones for the passengers to tantalise their taste buds before boarding flights.
Shopping: Both Departure and Arrival lounges have expansive duty free shopping zones dotted with numerous stores displaying high street brands to indulge the last minute as well as the souvenir shopper.
Medical Care: The leading Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited operates the state of the art Medical Centre facility at the airport. Baby changing facilities are also present.
Money, Banking, Postal and Telecommunications: The terminals are also equipped with bureau de change facilities, banks, Internet kiosks and ATMs. Postal services such as telegram, postal stamps, post cards, speed post etc are available. Passengers can also use the telephony services such as fax, long distance and international calling.
Airport Hotels: Several lavish as well as budget hotels are available in the vicinity of the airport and could be utilised in case of a long connection or a stopover. The Centaur, The Radisson, and Uppal’s Orchid are the popular ones and are conveniently accessible.
Luggage Storage: Standard car park in Terminal 1B and premium car park of Terminal II have a left luggage facility. However, the facility is currently on hold.
Lost and Found: Lost property is turned in at the Airport Manager Offices.
Railway Reservation Counter: Passengers can book on the spot railway tickets to any Indian destination from the railway reservation counter located in the terminal 2. The counter operates from 8 am to 8 pm.
Facilities for Passengers with Special Needs: Special rest rooms, reserved parking areas, ramps, and wheelchairs are available. The airport in itself provides for barrier free access.
Smoking: The business lounges allow smoking. The Security Hold Area also has a smoking lounge.
