After reaching Chilaw, visit the Muneeshwaram Temple in the Puttalam District. There are lots of legends surrounding the creation of this ancient Hindu temple complex, which is a collection of five temples including a Buddhist temple. The central temple is dedicated to Hindu God, Lord Shiva. Legend has it that Lord Rama, the Hindu God and King of Ayodhya, prayed to God Shiva at this location after his victorious battle with demon-King Ravana. After blessing him, Lord Shiva asks Lord Rama to erect and pray to four lingams at Manavari, Thiru Koneshwaram, and Thiru Ketheshwaram in Sri Lanka and at Rameshwaram in India.
Later, visit the Manavari Temple on the Chilaw-Puttalam road, around 10 km away from Chilaw. Manavari temple is a highly regarded Hindu temple, considered to be the first lingam set up and prayed to by Lord Rama. The lingam in this temple is also known as Ramalinga Shivan. The only other lingam named after Lord Rama is Rameshwaram in India.
After visiting the temples, proceed with your journey from Chilaw towards Kandy.
The Sri Lankan city of Kandy is a designated World Heritage Site, which was the last capital of the Sri Lankan Kings before it was brought under British rule in 1815. Even today, special pooja (religious rituals to worship a deity) is held here on every full moon day in the presence of thousands of devotees.
Get transferred from tea plantation to Nuwara Eliya.
As part of the journey, visit Gayathri Peedam, considered to be the location where demon-King Ravana’s son Meghanath pleased Lord Shiva with his penance and pooja. Pleased by Meghnath’s dedication, Lord Shiva granted him supernatural powers. Gayathri Peedam is the country’s first temple set up for Gayathri Amman. It is believed that the temple’s Shiva Lingam was brought from the holy river Narmada.
Proceed with your journey and visit the Seetha Amman Temple in Seetha Eliya. Ancient Hindu legends propagate that the stream flowing from the hill fulfilled the needs of Sitadevi during her stay at Ashoka Vatika. It is believed that she used to bathe in this stream. It is believed that Lord Hanuman’s foot prints, of various sizes, are located besides this river.
